Every manuscript sent to us is read start to finish by our editorial staff before we answer.

The author keeps the rights and the final say on every decision about the work.

Every title we publish goes out in print and as an ebook, with a hardcover where the book calls for it.

Publication is the middle of the job. We stay with the book through media, events, and reorders.

From the Publisher

I was sixteen when I first figured out what a book could preserve. I was reading The Picture of Dorian Gray and thinking about Dorian's obsession with escaping age and death. Dorian spends the story trying to outrun both and still fails. Wilde died in 1900, but people are still reading and teaching his work today.

The irony changed the way I thought about books. Dorian wanted immortality and Oscar Wilde achieved something close to it through the books he left behind. People who never knew him still study his characters and argue over his ideas more than a century later.

Life made the idea more personal as I got older. I had grown up around older members of my church and many of them became close friends. One by one those people died. Their stories survived in pieces through the people who remembered them. I began to understand how quickly a lifetime can disappear when there is no lasting record of it.

That belief became part of the reason I started Huntsville Independent Press. A book can preserve a voice long after the person who wrote it is gone. It can give future readers access to someone's experience and ideas. When we put our name beside an author's name, we accept responsibility for how that book is prepared and released.

HIP has grown far beyond what I pictured when it began. We now have a larger team and several imprints built for different publishing needs. We have also built better systems for production and for the work that follows publication.

That growth has not changed what I expect from the press. A book should be edited carefully and produced with the attention the work deserves. Publication also begins a new part of the job because the book still has to find readers and earn their time. I take that responsibility seriously for every book we agree to publish.

I still think about Wilde when I think about what a book can become after its author is gone. Every book enters the world with an uncertain future. Our responsibility is to take the work seriously before release and support it after publication. I expect HIP to carry that responsibility with every book we publish.
