International Literacy Day is an international holiday celebrated on September 8 every year. The holiday was created to recognize the importance of literacy in our lives and to promote and raise awareness of the need to improve literacy rates worldwide. Celebrated in more than 180 countries, International Literacy Day should be remembered and honored. In today’s article, we’ll take a closer look at this 58-year-old holiday and what makes it so special.
The History Of Literacy Day
Literacy Day was first celebrated in 1965 and has been celebrated every year since. It was created by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization to promote awareness and understanding of the importance of literacy and literature.
UNESCO developed Literacy Day as a way to remind us that literacy is essential to our development as individuals and as a society. It is also used to recognize the efforts of those who have worked to improve literacy in their communities and around the world. This can include teachers, librarians, non-profit organizations, and other organizations dedicated to improving literacy levels in a variety of ways.
Additionally, Literacy Day is a day to celebrate the power of literature and to remind ourselves that stories are an important part of our lives. Literature teaches us about history, culture, and the world around us. It can also inspire us, motivate us, and help us learn more about ourselves.
Why Literacy Day Is Important TODAY
In many countries, there are still a large number of people who cannot read or write. This can have a significant impact on their ability to access education, employment opportunities, and even basic health care. Literacy Day reminds us that action should be taken to improve literacy levels and boost the chance for many people to have their basic needs met as well as a chance for a better life.
We also shouldn’t underestimate the importance of stories in society and their ability to bring us joy, knowledge, and understanding. In addition to being an important tool for self-improvement, literacy can help us learn more about ourselves and our culture.
Finally, Literacy Day is a celebration of those individuals who have been working to improve literacy levels in their locale, without whom the world would be a much darker place. Their efforts often go unnoticed or uncelebrated. This day helps us shine a light on their important work. It also might inspire others to get involved.
How You Can Support The Holiday
There are many ways to support Literacy Day. One of the most important things you can do is to help spread awareness about the necessity of universal literacy. Talk to your friends, family, and colleagues about the importance of literacy, and encourage them to support the holiday. Consider donating to organizations that are dedicated to helping improve literacy levels in your community. Other efforts might include donating books or materials to help support these organizations in their efforts and supporting your local library.
In addition, believe it or not, you can support Literacy Day simply by reading more. Reading books can be a great way to learn more about the world, gain a better understanding of different cultures and societies, and relax and escape the stresses of everyday life. Reading newspapers supports journalists who work to bring information about the world and your community to your door. For every book or newspaper you purchase and read, you are supporting authors, publishers, and journalists who believe in the power of the written word and want to share that power with you.
Finally, you can support Literacy Day by being more mindful of how you use language in your own life. By thinking about how you use words and phrases in letters, assignments, emails, and even social media posts, you are promoting the concept that language is important and can be used to encourage, empower, enlighten, and entertain.
